c&c at work
Our work is based on a five-step approach that enables coffee farmers to effectively respond to climate change and become climate resilient. It involves systematic risk assessment at the farm level as well as identifying and implementing individual suitable adaptation options.

The five steps
Setting the scene gives an overview of how relevant climate change is for the local living and working environment of the farmer.
Assessment of challenges creates an understanding of the impacts of climate change on the farmer’s livelihood and their coffee production and identifies individual suitable adaptation options.
Adaptation planning prioritizes adaptation options and structures their implementation.
Validation and implementation facilitates the implementation of the selected adaptation measures and their validation on a small scale before they are disseminated to benefit more farmers.
Systematization monitors and evaluates the progress, results, and lessons learned. This step builds the foundation to restart the cyclical process as it provides the lessons and evidence on which to base future adaptation approaches. In addition, the climate is continuously changing, which means adaptation efforts need to be continuously revised.
Location-specific
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for climate change adaptation. This is why c&c identifies solutions that are suitable for local conditions (social, environmental and economic) and the specific coffee producing area.
Science-based and farm-oriented
c&c combines climate change science with proven farming methods and local expertise to reach the best possible solutions. We encourage collaboration between researchers and farmers in the field to achieve relevant practical results.
Complementary
The c&c approach is suitable as an add-on to training or to complement existing adaptation and capacity building programs.
Participatory
We engage farming households, farmer organizations and other partners in identifying local problems and potential solutions and helping to establish local Communities of Practice (CoP).
Practical
Hands-on and applicable tools for farmers and trainers are compiled in the c&c toolbox.
